Ortho-K and Orthokeratology

Dr. Sweeney at Vision Source Insight Eyecare is an Ortho-K specialist serving Sandy Springs, Dunwoody, Buckhead, and Atlanta. He has been helping patients achieve vision correction using Ortho-K for over 15 years.

What Is Ortho-K? What is Orthokeratology?

Ortho-k or Orthokeratology is a vision correction technique performed by Optometrists such as Dr. Sweeney. The treatment uses specially designed and fitted contact lenses to temporarily reshape the cornea to improve vision. Many refer to this treatment as Corneal Reshaping and it works in a similar way to dental braces but for the eyes. These eye retainers are worn at night, removed in the morning, and vision is perfectly corrected all day. They replace the need for daytime eyeglasses or regular contact lenses without surgery.

Ortho-K Lenses

Ortho-K lenses are specialized, gas-permeable contact lenses that are worn at night. The Ortho-K contact lenses gently reshape the front surface of the eye (Cornea) while you sleep and when they are removed in the morning, the cornea retains the same optimal shape all day and your vision is corrected. The vision improvements are reversible but are maintained when you keep wearing the nightly lenses as directed by your optometrist. FDA trials revealed that 60% of users could achieve 20/20 vision and 90% achieved 20/40 (required for driving) and that the improvements lasted 8-16 hours before reversing.

Who is a candidate for Ortho-k?

Ortho-K has been found to be effective for those experiencing Myopia (nearsightedness) and an Ortho K contact lens prescription can correct upwards of -7.00 diopters (D) of myopia. Ortho-k also can correct lesser degrees of Astigmatism (up to -5. diopters), Hyperopia and Presbyopia. These conditions are generally treated with prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses or potentially LASIK or PRK in adults.

  • Children – Orth-K has become a leading Myopia Control treatment in children and today over 60% of Vision Source Insight Eyecare’s patients are under the age of 18. Orthokeratology is an effective response to treating myopia in children and also preventing further progression.
  • Athletes/ Active Lifestyle – When eyeglasses get in the way, are a nuisance or frankly just don’t work. Ortho-K is often considered a better alternative to traditional contact lenses or LASIK.
  • Safety Glasses/Masks – Many professions mandate the use of masks, shields and safety glasses and Orthokeratology can alleviate the need for juggling prescription eyewear.
  • Fear of Vision Correction Surgery/ Ineligible for Vision Correction Surgery – Laser vision correction procedures such as LASIK or PRK are popular alternatives but in some cases patients may be fearful of surgery or ineligible and Orthokeratology may be a great solution.
